Dr. Stefan G. Humphries' patient-centered philosophy and long-time interest in medicine have steered his course in physical and medical rehabilitation.

Dr. Humphries earned a Doctor of Medicine and interned at the University of Colorado after being inspired by his sister's career as a physician. He completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Mayo Clinic, and later served as Medical Director and President of Medical Staff at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Colorado Springs. He completed his MBA at the University of Washington.

As the current Medical Director at St. Luke's Rehabilitation Institute, Dr. Humphries is a liaison between medical staff and hospital staff, and provides administrative leadership for St. Luke's.

Dr. Humphries spent five years as a professional football athlete playing for the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears. He enjoys hiking, skiing, team-oriented sports, music and art.

Duba photoDavid R. Duba, MD - Rehabilitation Associates

Dr. David Duba has been practicing with Rehabilitation Associates since September 1993. His practice includes both hospital and office patients with an emphasis upon treating the whole patient and looking at all of their medical social/cultural problems. Rehabilitation medicine aims to maximize the patient's physical self care, community access and vocational impairments to facilitate successful return to pre-injury status.

Dr. Duba earned his M.D. degree at University of Washington in 1988. His first career was in biology and ecology, including working on an agricultural development project in Saudi Arabia from 1977-1979.

Dr. Duba is board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. He has broad interests in rehabilitation including orthopedics, stroke, trauma, head injury, spinal cord injury, post cardiac and injured workers.

He and his wife have three young adult sons and they enjoy all types of outdoor activities.

Dr. Goodman 1Steven R. Goodman, MD - St. Luke's Physiatry Practice
Dr. Steven R. Goodman followed a unique path to medicine. Initially a mechanical engineer, he found that while he enjoyed the technical, problem solving aspect of engineering he missed the human dimension. Driven towards medicine, Dr. Goodman earned his Doctorate of Medicine at the State University of New York, School of Medicine in Buffalo, New York; interned at the UCSF-Mt. Zion Hospital and Medical Center in San Francisco, California; and completed his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington.

Dr. Goodman believes medicine is a patient-focused art and looks to understand each patient, their unique challenges and their desired outcome while drawing on the best of science in caring for them.

Dr. Goodman has a subspecialty interest in myofascial/soft tissue and musculoskeletal pain and serves as Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Washington. He is committed to timely and appropriate treatment to minimize chronic pain and disability. He is certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine.

A strong Mariner’s baseball fan, he enjoys tennis, fly fishing and traveling with his wife.

Dr. Mark S. Gordon fell in love with medicine as a young boy, enjoying going to the doctor as a child - a memory that eventually led him into the profession of medicine. His love of teamwork and working with people focused him into the specialty of physiatry, where he treats the whole person for medical rehabilitation. Dr. Gordon enjoys helping patients re-learn life-skills after a life-changing injury, working together with the patient, family members and therapists to achieve this goal. He also focuses on ensuring the patient is fully aware of his/her body’s condition, in order to lead the fullest life possible.

Dr. Gordon received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, interned in psychiatry at the Eisenhower Army Medical Center and completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Michigan Medical Center.

Dr. Gordon’s interest in medical rehabilitation started in the military where he served as a Flight Surgeon/General Practitioner for four years. He is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and spinal cord injury medicine.

He loves the outdoors, believing the Pacific Northwest to be one of the most beautiful parts of the country.

mackenzie photoKeith Mackenzie, MD - Rehabilitation Associates
Dr. Keith Mackenzie has been practicing rehabilitation for 30 years in Spokane. His wealth of experience and his strong interest in orthopedics, arthritis and neurology have allowed him to help many people with joint replacements, strokes, spinal cord injuries and arthritis regain functional lives and their independence.

Dr. Mackenzie received his medical education at the University of Washington. He completed a Family Medicine Residency before completing his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency at the University of Washington. He is currently a faculty member at the University of Washington and teaches fourth year medical students.

Certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Dr. Mackenzie is a published author.

He also enjoys having his patients tell him about their lives. "My grandmother lived with us when I was growing up and she taught me that everyone has an interesting story to tell about themselves." He feels this is one of the most interesting parts of his practice.

Outside his office, he is active in community projects and helps friends with technology problems. He enjoys the outdoors and likes to kayak and work in the garden.

A strong connection with each patient is the guiding influence in Dr. Vivian Moise's care. She sees herself as being a patient educator as well as a physician and works to improve the quality of life of each patient.

Dr. Moise graduated with honors from the University of California, San Francisco. She completed her Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency at the University of California Davis Medical Center, where she later served as Chief Resident. Board-certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as well as in the sub-specialty of Spinal Cord Injury Medicine, Dr. Moise currently serves as Medical Adviser/Director of the Spinal Cord Injury Program at St. Luke's Rehabilitation Institute and also as Medical Director for the Spokane Muscular Dystrophy Clinic.

Dr. Moise specializes in the treatment of patients with spinal cord injuries, neuromuscular diseases, and musculoskeletal injuries.

She is also an avid gardener and teaches international folk dancing.

schwartz photoRobert Schwartz, MD - St. Luke's Physiatry Practice
Dr. Robert Schwartz’ interest in science led him to a career in medicine, and his father’s profession as a biomedical engineer inspired him to specialize in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He enjoys the team approach in treating not only the medical issues of a patient, but also improving their functional status and maximizing their quality of life.

Dr. Schwartz is a graduate of Muhlenberg College and Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. He underwent rehabilitation training at the University of Pennsylvania. He is board certified in Physiatry, and a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He practiced in Miami, Florida, since 1990, until joining the St. Luke's Rehabilitation Institute team in 2004.

Dr. Schwartz is an avid bicyclist, who also enjoys running, gardening and cooking.

Dr. SotoPatrick Soto, MD - Northwest Medical Rehabilitation
Dr. Patrick Soto's knowledge of physiatry gives him the tools to help keep people active in their lives. He focuses on the ares of neurological and musculoskeletl dysfunctions, giving him a greater understanding that helps him provide patients with the highest level of care. Dr. Soto enjoys witnessing people get better after a little guidance.

He received his Doctor of Osteopathy in 2004 from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, completed an osteopathic traditional rotating internship at Darmouth Family Medicine Residency in Maine and completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Layola University in Chicago.

Dr. Soto's interest in medical rehabilitation became clear to him while he was training as an osteopath. The path became a natural progression once he discovered the field. He believed in the core principles: "Treat the entire person as mind, body, spirit and environment".

In his spare time, Dr. Soto enjoys fishing, snowboarding, wakeboarding, traveling, staying up late and sleeping in.

Blending compassion, empathy and expertise, Dr. Karen Stanek approaches patients with the desire to care for their physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Her philosophy of care seeks to help patients regain both their strength and independence.

Dr. Stanek received her MS and PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Wisconsin before receiving her medical degree from the University of Mississippi Health Sciences Center. She completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Colorado. She also studied Business Administration and Management at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Dr. Stanek was board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation in 1993, and re-certified in 2003. She served as Medical Director of Deaconess Rehabilitation Institute from 1993-1995 and is the founder of Northwest Medical Rehabilitation, her clinical practice. She specializes in brain injury, pediatric rehabilitation and complex spasticity management.

Dr. Stanek's personal interests include hiking and fishing.

Dr. Varga 1Mark R. Varga, MD - Rehabilitation Associates
Dr. Mark Varga enjoys watching the interdisciplinary aspects of health care come together to provide the fullest possible health and functional restoration to a person's life. By coordinating his efforts with other doctors, nurses and paramedical specialists, he leads the team to provide integrated and comprehensive care for each patient.

Dr. Varga began his medical training at George Washington University before serving as an intern at the Naval Hospital in San Diego, California, and then transferred to the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida for US Naval Flight Surgeon Training. He then served the Naval Aviation community. Dr. Varga completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Louisville. Certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Dr. Varga received America's Top Physicians Award in 2003, and is a member of the Physiatric Association of Spine, Sports and Occupational Rehabilitation.

Dr. Varga's key interests are outpatient musculoskeletal, general cardiac, orthopedic and neurological rehabilitation. He has three children, enjoys playing and coaching basketball.
