Sports are an important part of American life. From early childhood through adolescence, the values and skills learned on the playing field carry throughout adulthood. Teamwork, sharing, loyalty and commitment are taught and reinforced through sports experiences. This is especially true for young athletes with a physical disability.
Team St. Luke’s, a structured sports team for young and adult athletes with physical disabilities, encourages people to reach for their dreams and achieve success. While developing valuable life skills, Team members also have the opportunity to pursue college sports scholarships, participate in sports camps and compete in elite regional and national competitions. Through Team St. Luke’s, participants develop lasting friendships, master important life skills and most importantly have fun.

In 1995, five people with physical disabilities approached St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute looking to participate in organized sports. St. Luke’s developed Team St. Luke’s adaptive sports for athletes with many types of physical disabilities.
In 1999, Team St. Luke’s launched its first competitive youth team, a wheelchair basketball team with six athletes.
Competitive track and field was added in 2000, and today the team has grown to more than 30 athletes who compete in track and field, road racing, swimming and weight lifting.
