Cancer Recovery

The professional staff at St. Luke's, in collaboration with medical and health experts in cancer care, have designed this physical activity program that is individually tailored for persons diagnosed with cancer. After a referral by a physician or oncologist, participants undergo an evaluation by a physical therapist and an exercise specialist at St. Luke's. Based on the evaluation, a personal exercise program is designed to help you reach the goals you set for yourself.

Most participants report they have more physical tolerance; improved muscle strength and endurance; better sleeping pattens; more energy and less fatigue. They also report having a better body image and feeling less depressed.

Patients
Individuals in any stage of treatment, for any type of cancer, who are:

  • Newly diagnosed
  • Currently receiving treatment
  • Completed treatment or are currently in remission

Individuals at any level of fitness, for whom one or more of the following apply:

  • Never participated in regular exercise
  • Want to resume a previous exercise pattern
  • Have weight, mobility or balance problems that make it difficult to be physically active
  • Are uncomfortable going to a "gym" or fitness center
  • Might feel more comfortable engaging in physical activity with other cancer patients with similar experiences and limitations
  • Want to return to their highest level of activity, independence and quality of life

How is this different from other exercise programs?
All of the class participants have the experience of being diagnosed with, and treated for cancer. Health care professionals work with you one-on-one to determine what level and type of activities are right for you, based on careful evaluation of your health status and current level of ability. There is a feeling of camradare, a relaxed atmosphere and an emphasis placed on doing what you can and feeling good - not pushing yourself beyond your limit.
